The .338 Lapua Magnum cartridge is a rimless, bottlenecked centerfire cartridge. It is based on the .416 Rigby cartridge, from which it was formed. The .416 case was shortened and necked down to take a .338-caliber bullet.

It uses a large rifle magnum primer, and fires bullets weighing from 160 grains to 300 grains at muzzle velocities ranging from ~2500 FPS for heavier bullets, up to 3610 FPS for lighter bullets. It fires with a maximum pressure of around 63,000 PSI.[1]
