The 18.5×54mm SCMITR was an experimental military cartridge developed by the AAI Corporation for its entrant in the Close Assault Weapon System program.
Details[]
It is a specialized shotgun shell which uses ten blade-shaped projectiles that are stamped from sheet metal and are carried in a sabot.
These 1 gram (15.4 grains) projectiles each have the same sectional density as the darts in the 8-flechette loads that were also developed for the CAWS. Their flat shape could cause a larger, more disabling wound. Each projectile has two fins, which are slightly twisted so that they could spin for stability.
The dispersion is low, with all ten blades hitting within a 4 meter (13 feet) circle at a range of 150 meters (492 feet).
At a muzzle velocity of 365 meters per second (1,197.51 feet per second), the projectiles could penetrate through 76mm pine boards or 3mm low-carbon steel plates.
