The 5.6×43.8mm XM216 was an experimental military cartridge developed by Frankford Arsenal as part of the SPIW program.

Design Details[edit | edit source]

Developed as the successor to the XM144 series of flechette cartridges, the XM216 was based on the XM144WE4, a variant which uses traditional blunt projectiles and used a slightly-thicker case with a higher capacity for propellant. The idea, is that with the XM144WE4 casing's higher powder capacity, the XM216 would have a higher initial muzzle velocity than its predecessor.
