6P62 (Russian: 6П62) is a Russian select-fire anti-materiel rifle (generally described in Russian sources as a portable heavy machine gun) chambered in 12.7mm.

History

Very little information is available as to the history of the 6P62. Descriptions of the weapon first surfaced on the Russian-language internet in around 2007. It does not appear to have ever been adopted or put into production, and it is unclear how many were produced. It is also unclear if the weapon's name is an actual GRAU designation, and if so how the 6P62 came to have one.

Design

The purpose of the 6P62 is generally agreed to be an automatic anti-materiel weapon that can easily destroy lighter armor, while still being light enough to be carried by Airborne Forces.[1][2] The actual effectiveness of the 6P62 has been questioned however, as its capacity is extremely low compared to the likes of KORD which are belt-fed. The user would have to endure a lot of weight despite still not carrying a lot of ammunition. The recoil of the weapon would also be extreme, thanks to its heavy caliber and automatic fire.[3]

It is also questioned how does 6P62 manage to achieve its specifications (as posted online) despite its short barrel.[2]

A large muzzle device is mounted on the barrel. The device serves as a suppressor and a flash hider.[1] In addition, it appears that a muzzle brake is also present at the front of the muzzle device.

Ammunition

The weapon is described as firing "12.7mm" ammunition; it is uncertain which exact 12.7mm cartridge is used. One possibility is 12.7x108mm, but this thought has been put into question as the cartridge fired from the 6P62 looks shorter than a 12.7x108mm cartridge, as well as the fact that a 12.7x108mm cartridge would be difficult to suppress. Alternatively, it is thought that 12.7×54mm could be used in the weapon.[2][3]
