The ALFA 44 is a medium machine gun of Spanish origin.

History[]

The ALFA 44 was an indigenously Spanish designed machine gun developed in WW2. The weapon was made from 1944 to 1962 by Fabrica de Armas de Oviedo and served after 1945 well into the Cold War. It was used by the Spanish and Egypt.

Overview[]

The ALFA 44 is a gas operated, belt fed medium machine gun chambered in the 7.92x57mm round capable of firing at 780rpm. It had an air cooled finned barrel with the gas piston underneath. The cocking handle is on the right side of the receiver. It was later chambered in 7.62x51mm NATO as the ALFA 55 and had a shorter length of 1100mm with a 610mm barrel.

It must be noted that Egyptian variants of the ALFA 44 had cooling fins along the rest of the barrel. The sights had arabic numerals as well as a gas regulator and larger cooling slots.
