The AR-1, marketed as the Para-Sniper, was a bolt-action sniper rifle produced by ArmaLite. It is notable for having been the company's first product.

History[]

The AR-1 was designed by Eugene Stoner in 1947, and was picked up by ArmaLite in 1954. It was marketed for both military and civilian customers. After brief testing at the Aberdeen Proving Grounds, the AR-1 was rejected by the US Army and consequently ArmaLite shelved plans to put the rifle into full production. Only 25 prototypes were made.

Design[]

The AR-1 was a basic bolt-action rifle that used a Mauser-type bolt. The stock was constructed not from wood but from fiberglass, stuffed internally with foam. The barrel was made from aluminum alloys.
