The HAFDASA Z-4, also known as the Ballester-Rigaud carbine, was an Argentinian self-loading carbine that was produced by HAFDASA.

History[]

The Z-4 was designed in the mid-1940s by Carlos Ballester. It was issued in small numbers to Argentine police and military units during the late 1940s and early 1950s. Production of this gun was limited and few were made.

Design[]

The Z-4 was a 9×19mm self-loading carbine that operated on a basic blowback action. The components that made up the receiver were built from rust-resistant aluminum alloys. The barrel used a right-hand rifling twist with six lands. A folding bayonet, similar to that of the Beretta 18-30 carbine, could be fitted to the barrel.

The magazine used by the Z-4 was a high-capacity 54-round magazine with two separated columns, each with its own follower and feed spring. The magazine was designed in such a way that the second column would pivot into the feed position the gun after the first column had been fully expended.
