The Beretta 686 is an Italian over-under double barreled competition shotgun produced by Fabbrica d'Armi Pietro Beretta since 1994. One of Beretta's most successful shotguns, the 686 is a member of Beretta's 680 series of shotguns.
History[]
Beretta designed this shotgun in the 1990s as an entry-level shotgun. The weapon was introduced in 1994.[1] Some minor changes to Beretta's shotgun action were made which gave it the slimline action characteristic of all the 680 series guns.[2] Despite them being marketed as entry-level, 686s are often used in competitions due to their high quality and characteristics.
Design details[]
The Beretta 686 is a single-triggered double-barreled shotgun. Like some other shotguns, the 686 has auto-ejectors; this allows the shells to be ejected automatically when the weapon is "broken" into two, as opposed to most shotguns having only extractors which cause the shells to pop out a little bit when the weapon is "broken" into two. Trigger transfer to the second barrel is done via a recoil-driven inertia mechanism, although early production guns did so mechanically.
The Beretta 686 has interchangeable chokes,[3] branded MobilChoke.[4] The weapon has wooden furniture and has ventilated ribs placed above the barrels. A rubber buttplate is placed at the rear of the stock to absorb some recoil. The 686 is available in four different calibers, has a tang-mounted safety, barrel selector, has cold hammer-forged barrels and is also available with engravings.[3]
