The Model 57 was an Italian assault rifle produced by Beretta.
History[]
The Model 57 was developed by Tullio Marengoni in 1956. It was offered for international export, but other than small sales to Morocco, Beretta's attempts to market the Model 57 were met with no success. Production began in 1957 and ended in 1958, with only a very limited number of models being produced.
Design[]
The Model 57 was a gas-operated rifle that used a short-stroke piston, largely based on the American M1 Carbine. However, it differed from the M1 in that it used a tilting bolt lock. It also had a selective-fire capability through the use of a twin trigger mechanism, with the front trigger giving single shots and the rear trigger firing in full-automatic.
