A bolt delay is a term that refers to a device used in a Delayed blowback firearm that slows the rearward travel of the bolt during the first stage of extraction until the gas pressure drops to a safe level.

The term also refers to a firearm component such as a rate reducer device that slows/holds the bolt on for slightly longer in order to save ammo and increase controllability for accurate shots (PDWs the most common).
