A carbine is a short version of a rifle, with a barrel length of less than 16 inches. Generally speaking, most carbines are simply shorter versions of their parent rifles, mostly using the same ammunition and most of the same accessories as the larger weapon. Carbines tend to have slightly shorter effective range than their rifle counterparts, due in part to the shorter barrel and the resulting shorter sight radius.
