The Cugir NAT 1 was a Romanian assault rifle designed around 2012 and produced by Cugir Arms Factory in 2017 in prototype form only.
History[]
The NAT 1 was designed around 2012 and first publicly unveiled in 2017 at a symposium in Alba Iulia in 2017, unveiled by Nicolae Mihăilesc, director of Cugir. The weapon is intended to be put into service to replace the good but aging PM md. 63/65 assault rifles in the Romanian Army. To that end, Cugir manufactured 10 prototypes, with 5 intended for testing. The weapon is stated to be currently waiting for trial and contracts for replacement in the Romanian Army.[1]
Anticipating potential contracts, Cugir hired an unknown amount of new support staff intended to produce the weapon.[2]
Design Details[]
The NAT 1 is an AK-pattern assault rifle, based on the AK-74M design. The prototype is stated to use aspects of already existing AK type models. The weapon uses 5.56×45mm NATO ammunition for logistical reasons. The weapon features a telescoping AR-15 - style stock. The weapon is stated to be able to be customized for different needs, such as polymer magazines for paratroopers, lasers, flashlights for those intended for use by border police and others.[2]
