The Doppelstutzen was a double-barrel flintlock combination gun of Austrian origin. The weapon uses a 14mm upper rifled barrel and a 15.2 mm lower smoothbore barrel.
The Doppelstutzen was used as a skirmishing rifle by elite Austrian Jäger Troopers and border (Grenzer Regiment) snipers. It has no bayonet mount. The twin barrel arrangement was to make the weapon faster firing. The upper rifled barrel was used for long distance targets whereas the lower smoothbore barrel for close range targets.
Trivia[]
The concept of using double barrels for open range/close quarter combat was later used on the ITM Model 3 and ITM Model 4.
