The DoubleTap is an American double barrel break-open derringer-style pocket pistol designed by Ray Kohout in 2011 and produced since 2013 by Azimuth Technology and marketed by DoubleTap Defense.

History[]

The DoubleTap was initially developed by Ray Kohout in 2011 as the Heizer DoubleTap, marketed by Heizer Defense of Pevely, Missouri.[1] However, the next year, Kohout was involved in an acrimonious split with Heizer Defense, apparently due to the latter's inability to "fulfill its manufacturing obligations"; he would then partner with Azimuth Technology of Naples, Florida to produce the pistols.[2]

Production began in 2013 with the guns produced by Azimuth Technology with the gun marketed by DoubleTap Defense; the pistol is advertised as "the world's smallest and lightest .45 ACP concealed carry pistol on the market today". It however seems that DoubleTap Defense may have gone out of business as errors are produced on attempting to purchase the pistol.[3]

Design Details[]

The DoubleTap is a striker-fired break-action pistol. The pistol uses two rounds fitted in a speedloader-like device (named the "DoubleTap Loading Device") which fits into the gun. Two additional rounds and a speedloader can be fitted in the grip. The pistol features switchable barrels to change between calibers and an ambidextrous thumb latch. Ported and non-ported barrels are available.[4] Reviews of the pistol are noted to have been rather poor.
