The FAS-173 is a gas-operated fully automatic shotgun. It is chambered in 12 gauge, with early prototypes chambered in 20 gauge. This firearm was designed initially to compete with the AA-12.

History

The FAS-173 was designed by John Foote, who based it on an assault rifle he had built based on the AK series.

Design details

The FAS-173 is gas-operated, utilizing a long-stroke piston gas system. 12 gauge models are built almost entirely of steel; 20 gauge variants (which existed only in early prototype form) used a steel lined aluminum barrel. Stocks are primarily wood (though some plastic stocked versions were tested), with a recoil pad on the buttstock, variants with folding stocks were also built.

The FAS-173 was meant to be part of a series of weapons, ranging from an assault rifle and light machine gun (which existed only on paper).
