The FN EVOLYS is a lightweight machine gun chambered in 5.56x45mm NATO/7.62x51mm NATO manufactured by FN Herstal.
Development[]
The FN EVOLYS was designed for urban warfare which has become more common in the 21st century and the permanent use of suppressors and to improve the firepower of a soldier rather than taking the base of fire from a squad.
Overview[]
The FN EVOLYS is an ultra light machine gun for a belt fed weapon. The weapon uses open bolt firing with select fire capability and uses short stroke gas operation, rotating bolt and components made from alloys and polymer using 3D printers. The belt feed is unusual as its placed on a 45° angle, this allows quicker reloading as when placing the belt in the feed tray when closing feed the first round in the chamber. To speed up reloading during combat, the belt feeder also uses an operation to eject the last 2 links of the belt. The firing operation is unusual as it is open bolt firing with its operation placed upside down in the receiver with a separate hammer, this prevents runaways even if the bolt is placed forward wont fire unless the hammer is released by a trigger pull. Firing controls are ambidextrous and can allow operating/reloading with one hand. The QC barrel also allows the use of suppressors without affecting its operation. Integral picatinny rails are used on the receiver which eases the use of sights etc.
