The IMBEL IA2 is a fully automatic assault rifle chambered in the 5.56 mm NATO cartridges, is the most modern and innovative Brazilian rifle in decades.

History

Trying to find a new assault rifle, the government of Brazil, charge IMBEL to create a new rifle to replace the almost obsolete FN FAL. At first, it was a modernization of the IMBEL MD called MD97 MK. II, however, the project was cancelled, because it didn't have all the army's needs. Using the learn about the old prototype, they presented a new prototype in 2010 at Rio de Janeiro, when it began to be tested at the Army Evaluation Center.[1]

Design

The rifle comes in two calibres 5.56 x 45 mm and 7.62 x 51 mm. But is not a modular system, rather they are two different variants.[2]

The rifle has 4 Picatinny rails that are for adding sights, grips or laser devices.

The barrel is compatible with nozzles grenades.[3]

It uses a short-stroke gas piston with the manual gas regulator, located above the barrel, it's almost the same used why the FN FAL. The receiver is compatible with stanag mags in 5.56 mm and FAL mags in 7.62 mm. Most parts are made out of polymer, except the grip and the lover handguard (forend).[4]
