The iNkunzi Strike, also known as the NeoStrike,[1] is a prototype South African heavy automatic weapon.

History[]

The Strike has been developed since about 2016 by Tony Neophytou, founder of Neostrike (Pty) Ltd which was set up specifically to develop the weapon.[2]

The weapon is said to have been trialed by March 2018[3] but nothing appears to have come of it at present.

Design Details[]

Essentially a belt-fed adaptation of Neophytou's other pet project, the Personal Area Weapon, the Strike is a dual-feed short-recoil operated heavy cannon[4] that feeds from NSV machine gun belts.[3]

The weapon's barrel and bolt housing recoil back and forth within the weapon in an effort to decrease recoil.[3] The weapon has been integrated into Denel's SD-ROW (Self-Defence Remotely Operated Weapon) system to act as a turret; the system was developed by the Mechatronics division of Denel.[5][6] The Strike, or at least earlier prototypes of the weapon, was able to fire both .50 BMG rounds and the Strike's special 20mm ammunition with a simple barrel change;[4] this feature appears to have been dropped on later prototypes.

Ammunition[]

The Strike uses a proprietary 20Ɨ42mmB cartridge in a variety of types. The primary rounds are high-explosive incendiary (HEI) and semi-armor piercing high explosive incendiary (SAPHEI), a variant with an added tungsten penetrator. A practice round is also available, as is a direct-fire non-explosive armor piercing round. Both rounds have a hexal P30 filling with a contact fuze.[6]
