The Kalashnikov sniper rifle (Russian: Снайперская винтовка Калашникова Snaiperskaya Vintovka Kalashnikova) is a post-war Soviet sniper rifle designed by Mikhail Kalashnikov.

History[]

Kalashnikov's sniper rifle was a design submitted to the 1959 development project by the soviet union to replace the Mosin-Nagant in the form of sniper rifles and marksman rifles, where it would compete against 3 other designs, most notably, the Dragunov sniper rifle.

Design[]

The rifle used a gas operated short stroke piston and is chambered in 7.62×54mmR. Many of the design choices for this weapon were taken from his previous AK-47 rifle, such as the sights and the handguard. The gun was fed from 10 round detachable box magazines. But, it was also possible to load it with stripper clips from the top of the receiver. The weapon featured a cutout in the bolt carrier as a guide for the stripper clips. It was also possible to mount optics on the left side of the receiver. It was considered a very reliable and accurate rifle, but ultimately ended up losing out to what would become the Dragunov.
