A United States Marine marksman.

The term "marksman" refers to those skilled in shooting from a long distance. Early marksmen or sharpshooters such as the British rangers and the Jaegers of the various German states appeared during the 1700s. Marksmen of the 1800s used long-range flintlock and caplock rifles equipped with small sights. During the American Civil War, both Union and Confederate troops skilled in long-range shooting used rifles designed for sharpshooting.

Modern marksmen usually utilize precision rifles to fulfill this role. These are rifles (often derived from an assault rifle or battle rifle) that have been accurized for this role.
