A muzzle brake, also known as a recoil compensator or simply a compensator when used in the context of pistols, is a device found on a barrel that redirects the gas produced by the propellant ignited, typically allowing for flatter (in which the firearm does not rise as much due to recoil) shooting. It is commonly used for recoil control.
