The OTs-39 Baksanets (Cyrillic: ОЦ-39 Баксанец) was a Russian submachine gun designed by Vladimir Zlobin in 1998 and produced by TsKIB SOO in prototype form only.

History[]

The OTs-39 was designed in 1998 by Vladimir Zlobin as a modern submachine gun to replace whatever outdated weapons that were still in use with Russian military forces at the time. It appears that the weapon may have been intended for use by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Ministry of Defense, with Zlobin also suggesting that the weapon also be used for cadet training to take advantage of whatever 7.62×25mm Tokarev stockpiles the Russians had; however, nothing appears to have come of the weapon.[1]

During the 2000s when use of the 7.62mm Tokarev cartridge began to wane, Zlobin suggested that the weapon be modified to chamber the 9×19mm Parabellum cartridge; this modification was known as the OTs-39P. Similarly, nothing appears to have come of this iteration of the weapon.[1] The weapon may have been related to the TKB-0247 which was developed around a similar time, also by Zlobin.

Design Details[]

The OTs-39 is a modern submachine gun featuring a stamped metal receiver with polymer furniture. The weapon features a folding stock and a folding charging handle situated on the left of the gun; the handle folds up when not in use. The OTs-39 takes 20-, 30- or 40-round magazines and features a three-position selector switch, allowing its user to fire single shots, in bursts or fully automatically. The weapon is stated to have "high accuracy" helped by its large muzzle brake. Diopter sights are present, which can be adjusted from 100 to 200 meters.[1]

Variants[]
