The term projectile, is what is used to describe the piece that is fired from a gun upon being propelled by the powder (or some other type of propellant) in either the bullet cartridge in modern firearms, or the barrel in older firearms. In older firearms a lead ball wrapped in cloth was what was fired, after being propelled by the powder. Many different types of projectiles are used in modern shotguns, such as slugs, metal pellets, and others.
