The R-92 (Cyrillic: P-92) and the related U-94 Udar (Cyrillic: Удар, lit. "strike") are compact Russian revolvers designed to be used as concealed carry weapons by police forces in Russia.

History[]

In the early 1990s, the KBP Instrument Design Bureau designed a compact, double-action/single-action revolver to be used by police or security forces; this would be known as the R-92. The R-92 was then upscaled to become the U-94 Udar, which used proprietary ammunition ranging from lethal slugs to non-lethal/less-lethal rounds such as CS gas and rubber batons. The Udar and its related weapons failed to catch on, as police agencies in Russia preferred semi-automatic pistols with high capacity magazines rather than a revolver; the U-94 and its derivatives were not mass-produced as a result, with only some 3,000 produced between 1992 and 1996. A less-lethal revolver known as the Ratnik was subsequently developed based on the Udar family of weapons in 2006.

The weapon is currently in use by the MVD.

Design Details[]

As mentioned before, the R-92 mechanically is a double action revolver with a shrouded hammer.[1] The frame has a slot cut out on top so the user can access the hammer manually. In order to switch between lethal and non-lethal cartridges, the cylinder has to be switched out.[2]

Ammunition[]

The ammunition used by the R-92 is the 9×18mm Makarov round. Its variants use various forms of 12.3mm ammunition.[2]

Variants[]

  • R-92: chambered for 9mm Makarov
  • R-92S: chambered for 9mm Makarov +P ammunition
  • R-92KS: chambered for .380 ACP
  • Udar (U-94): chambered for rubber baton and CS gas rounds (12.3×50mmR)
  • Udar-S: chambered for lethal ammunition (12.3×22mmR PM-32)
  • Udar-TS: chambered for training ammunition (12.3×40mmR)
