The SR3 "Vikhr" (Cyrillic: СР-3 «Вихрь», Russian for "whirlwind") is a Russian 9×39mm compact assault rifle, manufactured by the Tula Arms Plant. The abbreviation "SR" stands for spetsialnaya razrabotka — special development.
Overview[]
The SR3 "Vikhr" is a compact, fully-automatic assault rifle, and is chambered for the 9×39mm subsonic round. It was designed in the early 1990's and shares many design features of the earlier AS "Val".
The SR3 "Vikhr" is not capable of attaching a suppressor. A new modified variant of the SR3 that combines the features of the AS "Val" and SR3 was developed, the SR3M. It features a unique grip that can fold into a recess under the handguard, and is compatible with a detachable suppressor. The 30-round magazine used by the SR3MP is compatible with both the AS Val and the VSS Vintorez.
Variants[]
- SR3
The SR3 "Vikhr" was originally designated as AM "Vikhr" – Malogabaritnyj Avtomat "Vikhr" (small-sized automatic rifle, code-name "Whirlwind").
- SR3M
The SR3M is a modified variant of the SR3, which allows the ability to attach a suppressor. It combines the compact design of the SR3 and the ability to be suppressed like the AS "Val", although it is not an integrated suppressor.
It has improved polymer furniture, a more convenient charging handle, AS-style controls (safety lever, semi-automatic/full automatic selector switch is inside the trigger guard), an AS-style side-folding stock, a redesigned handguard with a folding foregrip and where the rear sight is now located, a specially developed quick-detachable suppressor, a Warsaw Pact-spec rail mount, and a new magazine with a 30-round capacity which provides a more reliable feeding during automatic fire whilst still compatible with the 10- and 20-round magazines from the original SR3, AS "Val" and the VSS "Vintorez". It is also worth to mention that the 30-round magazine is also compatible with the AS "Val" and VSS "Vintorez".[1]
- SR3MP
The SR3MP is a further development of the SR3M, intended for special operations. It is similar to the SR3M but features a new Dovetail rail mount for mounting various optical sights. The handguard receives two Picatinny rails on each side for mounting laser sights, tactical flashlights and other tactical accessories. An additional rail is added below the pistol grip for the folding stock to be mounted for operators who wears a full-face shield mask, bulletproof helmet, or night vision gear to still be able to aim by the shoulder without the stock getting in the way.[2]
