The Serbu BFG-50A is a semi-automatic .50 caliber rifle developed for civilian use. It is a variant of the bolt-action BFG-50.

History[]

Photos of the prototype were first shown in 2002, and the first orders for the weapon were taken at the 2008 SHOT Show held in Las Vegas, Nevada. Deliveries of the weapon had started on June 17th, 2011.

In 2013, Serbu Firearms refused to sell the BFG-50A to the New York City Police Department, due to the passage of the NY SAFE Act, which classified the rifle as an "assault weapon."

Design Details[]

In contrast to its bolt-action brother, the BFG-50, the BFG-50A is a semi-automatic rifle. It is gas-operated with a three-lug rotating bolt, dual ejector plungers, a sliding plate extractor, and a hydraulic recoil buffer.

The bolt locks into a barrel extension that is threaded to the barrel. The locking surfaces of the bolt lug and barrel extension are of a helical design. The gas operation system is similar to those used in the AG-42 Ljungman and MAS-49/56 rifles.

Similarly to the BFG-50, the BFG-50A uses Serbu's own reamer barrel technology, which allows the use of surplus ammunition but also giving far greater accuracy than what could be achieved with machine gun barrels. The weapon uses the eight-port "Shark Brake" muzzle brake.

The barrel/barrel extension and handguard are removable to allow different barrel and handguard lengths and configurations.

The BFG-50A uses the same type of magazines as used in the Barrett M82 anti-materiel rifle.

Ammunition[]

The BFG-50A is chambered in the .50 BMG cartridge like with the BFG-50. However, for the State of California where .50 BMG rifles are banned for civil use, the weapon is available in a .510 DTC EUROP chambering.
