A Spotting rifle (Ranging gun in some cases) is a device used on Artillery and Anti tank rocket launchers etc. When firing, if the round of the spotting rifle manages to hit the target, it is assumed that the Artillery/Launcher etc will also.
Some spotting rifles use specially designed rounds for this type of platform, notably the 9x51mm SMAW used on the Shoulder-launched Multipurpose Assault Weapon and LAW 80.
