I've always felt that this rifle (and the Spanish CETME) is probably the best battle rifle ever made, apart from the Armalite AR10 and the recent SCAR-H. The roller-delayed blowback operation is smooth and reliable as long as quality ammunition is used to prevent extraction issues. I've always been a fan of full-power cartridges, and I think that the trend toward rounds like the NATO SS-109 5.56x45 is not the best all-around choice for a military cartridge. The NATO 5.56 is fine for close quarters battle conditions, but is lacking for most all other applications. The FAL is also a fine choice, but I've heard that the G3 is easier to handle and smoother overall. Its been interesting to see a trend now toward larger military rounds other than the 5.56mm. Sometimes bigger is better!
